Antioxidants

Welcome to the Antioxidant Reference Guide
Antioxidants are natural compounds that prevent cell damage caused by the effects of oxidation. Oxidation, caused by free radicals in the body, can best be compared to the rusting of metal. Its effect on the body paves the way for a variety of diseases including cancer and heart disease. Oxidation, caused by free radicals can also speed up the effects of aging.

Although it is believed that the body may produce antioxidants of its own, healthy diets and supplements, rich in antioxidant properties, are your best bet in fighting cancer-causing free radicals.

Free radicals are a natural by-product of our body's natural function. If left unchecked, they will cause harmful oxidation, which can result in a higher risk of cancer and heart disease. Of course, free radicals can also result from smoking cigarettes or radiation exposure.

Antioxidants help to clean up free radicals before they can oxygenate and cause harm to the body. Those who have diets rich in antioxidants and/or take antioxidant supplements, are less likely to suffer the effects of free radicals. Even smokers with a high antioxidant intake are less likely to develop lung cancer.
